Bhakta Dasia

Bhakta Dasia Bauri was a great devotee of Lord Jagannath in the 15th century AD. He was born into a low caste of weavers' family and lived with his wife Malati in a hut on a small piece of land. For a living he did his traditional weaving. They lived in abject poverty and managing two meals a day was not possible on several occasions. Those days there was the tradition of having a prayer hall in the village where the Bhagabata texts were read aloud and explained in discourses.

Dasia Bauri, a 15th-century weaver from Baligaon, became a fervent devotee of Lord Jagannath after visiting Puri's car festival; back home, a meal of white rice and leafy greens served in a new utensil appeared like the Lord's eye, filling him with joy. Selling his cloth in nearby Praharajpur, he bartered a newly woven towel for a fresh coconut, intending to offer it to Jagannath.

The skeptical villagers took Dasia's coconut to Puri, forgot to offer it inside, then presented it near the temple gate, where it miraculously vanished from the bearer's hands—news that spread widely and affirmed that the Lord accepts offerings from a humble devotee, elevating Dasia's standing. At Dasia Pitha, the small Gotha Gadia pond is famed for sacred visions—Pancha Sakha reportedly saw reflections of the Ratha Jatra and the Dasa Avatar there.
